Jordan threw a Concussion Party for me. I’m not kidding. I don’t know who told him what was going on but what we found when we got to his place was ambient techno burbling in the background from a new surround-sound speaker system he’d recently installed and ambient lighting low.

The first person I saw after walking in the door was Bradley, looking very doe-eyed, clutching a beer and standing at the edge of the kitchen counter. Before I could get to him, though, Marvelle intercepted me. I swung my left hand toward him and he, like Artie, didn’t blink, just locked fingers with me thumb-wrestling-style and clapped me on the back of the shoulder with his other hand. “Gonna bubblewrap you, man. Make a Daron-shaped foam cut out and put you in an Anvil case.”

That night there was something of a party at the hotel. Not an official industry type party, nothing that formal, although there were some industry people there. Like Jordan. And some friends. Like Matthew. I guess it was more of a mass hangout than a party, do you know what I mean?

I had a long conversation with Matthew about essentially nothing, which was really kind of nice, you know? He was doing well, so was his partner, one of his photos had been picked for some prestigious thing I didn’t quite get the name of, but mostly we just…talked. I know most people take for granted that talking with an old friend should be easy but I never take any social situation for granted. I have the ability to fuck them up no matter how stress free they should be.

When I got back to the party, the jam session had broken up, the Ovation was in its case. I could tell from the way everything was arranged that Flip had been the one to put it away. Once a guitar tech, always a guitar tech.

I went to find him to say thanks. He was expounding about posture to Martin, who was nodding like he’d heard this one before.

“Hey,” Flip said to me. “I picked up my messages from home. I’ve got two questions for you.”

“Only two?”

So by the time we got to Brisbane, it was the next day, which meant we didn’t see much of the place other than the concert hall and the hotel, since the day after that we flew to Melbourne. The main thing I remember is having breakfast in the hotel and feeling a sense of relief that everyone spoke English. I’d gotten used to everyone around me speaking Japanese and I’d forgotten what it was like to be able to assume everyone around you could understand you, and vice versa. The main thing to say about the Brisbane show was we played the same set as in Fukuoka, including Remo playing on those songs we’d agreed on.

Also, after the Japanese audiences, playing in front of Australians was like drinking rocket fuel. Man, they get into it.

On the Tuesday before Thanksgiving, the production company where Jonathan was working had their “holiday” party. (I think technically it counted as Christmas and New Year’s, too.)

I didn’t think of Jonathan’s company as very large, but apparently they were part of a group of affiliated companies, and each one of those companies had various successful (and not so successful) shows and films to their credit, which meant that the party was large and had a lot of A-list and B-list types. I pictured it as if Charles River Records and all the other small record companies that BNC distributed got together to throw a party.
