Remember last year at this time when I was spazzing out about what to wear to the RT Awards ceremony? Guess what. I have to spazz out again. For an even more exciting reason.

I’ve won the Career Achievement award in Erotic Romance! To say this is awesome is a bit of an understatement. It’s really quite… wow. I’m a writer and I’m supposed to be able to write something eloquent about how I feel but right now that’s all I’ve got: awesome, wow. I promise I’ll have cooked up something better by the time I give the acceptance speech in Dallas in May! (See the full list of winners at RT Magazine.)

So yes, I’m dress shopping, shoe shopping, etc…! It’s an evening gala this year, followed by champagne “meet the winners” reception and everything, so I’m thinking full-on ballgown is warranted…?

I’m super excited to share this new gorgeous cover with you all! The incredible skill and talent of Fox Estacado Arts just blows me away. So here we have book three of the new editions of the Magic University series: The Incubus and the Angel.

The subject of the cover this time is Kyle’s best friend Alex. This is the book that is the most about friendship, ultimately, as not only is Alex’s support crucial to Kyle, but the “friends with benefits” relationship Kyle strikes up to aid Lindy with her magical difficulties blossoms into something special, too.

You can preorder the ebook right now at Amazon (Kindle format) or at Smashwords (epub format), and on April 8 audio and paperback editions will also go live!

This post is also where you can sign up to help me spread the word about the book! If you join my Thunderclap campaign (by linking your Twitter, Facebook, or Tumblr here: http://thndr.it/1E5FO36) I will thank you with either an erotic story via email or a Magic U sticker (your choice). You can also sign up below to review the book on Amazon or Goodreads, or to host me for a blog tour April 8-16th?

Details, and the cover art of course, below the cut!

Tower-and-Tears_Amazon_200I’ve been having a verrrry busy week on the Internet so I figured I’d present it in a roundup blog post:

I’m on a blog tour to support the release of The Tower and the Tears, which has a bisexual hero and the idea for which came about while I was writing Harry Potter fanfic for fun. Two of the guest blogs I did on those topics have gone bananapants viral!

First, over at the Lambda Literary Review I wrote about the trope of “Bisexuality in Science Fiction” literature.

I wrote: “As a young bisexual growing up in the 1980s, when I thought I was possibly the only one of my species, I was drawn to science fiction because while I didn’t see space for myself to exist in contemporary stories, I could imagine a world that included people like me only by imagining other worlds. I wasn’t the only one who felt that way: many writers also used the expansive canvas of worldbuilding and futurism that science fiction afforded them to explore sexuality “outside the box,” and bisexuality in particular is a trope that has been explored variously in every era of the genre.”

I talk about how “Science fiction literature of the 1970s used bisexuality as a signifier of outsider/other, alien, or futuristic status” but how more recently, as the literature moved toward more representation of actual people and not “tropes” in the late 90s, bisexual characters in sf/f began to suffer the same invisibility that bisexual people do in real life.

The article got a big shoutout on i09 and you can read the original article on the Lambda Literary website: http://www.lambdaliterary.org/features/01/18/a-look-at-bisexuality-in-science-fiction/

Second, I wrote about “Why Fanfic Matters to Pros” for the OTW website.

International Fanworks Day is coming up, and as the OTW gears up for that, my post tackles the subject of why fanfic and fanworks are good for professional writers.

“We pro writers can be a very insecure lot, and with good reason: our world is uncertain, and our lives and livelihoods often depend on the whims of both large corporations and the faceless masses. Just because the corporations are cozying up to fans now (and looking to utilize and even monetize fan culture) doesn’t mean that the landscape got any smoother or more reassuring for us. For some, I’m sure the spectre of fan fiction is even more ghoulish than it was before. For those who were convinced fanfic was a form of theft, the money being earned by EL James and Anna Todd must seem like proof!”

“[Some pro authors believe] fanfiction hurts writers because it takes away attention from the writer’s original work and gives it to fan writers instead. This last point is truly an emotional one, but if looked at with rational eyes is revealed to be patently backwards. There is no more loving and in-depth attention given to a writer’s work than that paid by fanfic writers and readers.”

The OTW also shared a snippet from the essay on their Tumblr and it has been reblogged many times:

“Pro writers: this isn’t a zero sum game. Every minute a reader’s eyeballs are on fanfic does not mean a minute is subtracted from the attention the original work receives. We don’t get paid per eyeball or per minute anyway: there is no Nielsen rating for books. If anything we get “paid” these days for the size of our audience (author “platform”) and the passion of reader engagement, both of which are GROWN via the vehicle of fanfic. Fans are good for a career. Fans are good for a writer to have. Fans are not merely a passive sea of consumers: fans are evangelists, recruiters, and cheerleaders. Given that, why wouldn’t a professional writer want to do everything possible to support fans and fandom?”

Meanwhile, I was interviewed on two blogs as part of the tour, by fellow authors who will be presenting at BDSM Writers Con in August. Gray Dixon and Silk Jones both write kinky romance and interviewed me about the subject:

Gray asked “What kind of research do you do for your books?”

Cecilia Tan: My entire life ends up being inadvertent research. Since I’ve been in the BDSM lifestyle for over 20 years if I happen to want to include a kink in a book or story I can usually find someone who can tell me about it. The details from life that make it into books aren’t necessarily what you can read in how-to books: the way my socks feel as my lover pulls them off my feet, shower sex can make me lightheaded, the way lube tastes when you accidentally get it in your mouth… I end up researching mundane things like floor plans for the buildings where scenes are set, the time of sunrise, and weather.

Read the whole interview on Gray Dixon’s blog here: http://graydixon.blogspot.com/2015/01/flogger-friday-with-cecilia-tan.html

Silk asked “Do your nearest and dearest know what you do, and if so, what was their reaction when they found out?”

Cecilia Tan: “Found out” makes it sound like my erotic writing was ever a secret. It was never a secret. I’ve been a professional erotica writer pretty much my entire adult life. My first professionally published story over 20 years ago was a self-bondage story called “A True Story,” which it was. My mother was little worried about bondage and the master/slave roleplaying at first. Her take was that she couldn’t figure out how she had raised me to be a freedom fighter for civil rights and yet I could eroticize slavery. Once I explained that BDSM is about consent and a personal imaginative connection between two people, and nothing about the subjugation of one race by another, she was fine with it. She reads all my books!

Still to come, an interview on Paige Matthews’ blog and an essay on bisexual characters and identification that will be posted as part of the Queers Destroy Science Fiction! campaign on Kickstarter!

I also did an online video chat, which you can now watch:

Pre-orders for the ebook can be made on Amazon right here: http://www.amazon.com/dp/B00RW7SERU

For my fandom followers, this is the series that is my answer to Harry Potter. It’s a university where sex magic is the most powerful subject and that means our hero Kyle can’t exactly ignore his sexuality (or his bisexuality) when he’s trying to save the world.

This cover depicts Timothy Frost, Kyle’s nemesis.

And now, the fantastic and amazing art! Click on the thumbnail to see it full size (or just look under the cut):

The latest installment of my award-winning web serial about coming out and coming of age in the 1980s is now out in ebook form! DGC Volume 6 includes chapters 389 through 472 of the web serial.

Official description: After the tumultuous events at the end of the tour in 1989 leave Daron and the band reeling, it’s time to get off the road for a while. When an opportunity to stay in Los Angeles comes up, Daron takes it. There’s session work and music industry schmoozing galore to be done in LA, but Daron’s true reason for wanting to be on the West Coast temporarily is simple: Ziggy is in isolation drug rehab in Cailfornia. Daron wants to be nearby, even if Ziggy can’t communicate with the outside world. Is Daron prepared to deal with Digger, record company politics, and creative challenges alone?

Book Six is live on both Amazon (http://amzn.com/B00OZEOQAW) and Smashwords (https://www.smashwords.com/books/view/488720).

At Smashwords you can purchase ePub and other ebook formats.

I’ve also installed a new Shopping Cart/downloadable products system on the Daron’s Guitar Chronicles website so people can buy all the ebooks directly from me, too. I’m still working out the bugs in the system, but the new shopping cart will let people name their own price for ebooks (with a minimum price of 99 cents each, suggested retail price of $5.99 each). Right now the system is mostly working with a few glitches in providing encrypted download links! So if you want to buy the ebook from me directly, you can! Check out the updated Merch Page here: http://daron.ceciliatan.com/shopping-cart

**Deadline is passed! Thank you all for playing! I’ll plan to make this offer again in a few months!**

The fanfic roots of my Magic University series are pretty clear, I think: who in Harry Potter fandom didn’t wonder what college would be like for wizards and witches? Although I have all original characters and an original magical system, the MU books are by a fan (me), for fans (*waves to LJ flist*), and happen to be liked by lots of other readers, too.

One of the most exciting and important developments during my time in HP fandom has been the creation and growth of the OTW: Organization for Transformative Works. If you’re not familiar with the OTW, you should be. The OTW, plain and simple, fights for the rights of fans to create fanworks. They are a bastion against the mishandling and misconduct that corporations and literary estates are prone to as they overreach on what copyright entitles them to. (Did you see that the Doyle estate finally was forced to accept that Holmes and Watson are in the public domain?)

And fanworks are in the news a lot these days (you might have noticed that 50 SHADES OF GREY, which began life as a fanfic, turned the publishing industry completely inside out last year, while AFTER, a One Direction fic from Wattpad, sold to a NYC publisher for six figures…). I believe that as corporations realize there is money to be made and material to be exploited, the right of fans to create transformative works is one that will need to be defended even more zealously than it was when they were just calling us “pirates” and “molesters” for doing it.

The OTW also operates The Archive of Our Own, a fanworks and fanfic archive. Anyone who has ever had a fanwork TOS’d or DMCA’d off a site like YouTube or Livejournal knows the value in having an online repository that is owned by us, not by some tech company.

I’ve been a paying member of the OTW for years. This year I decided to go a step further, and with the blessing of the OTW’s membership and development folks, I cooked up the following plan.

**Deadline is passed! Thank you all for playing! I’ll plan to make this offer again in a few months!**

Join the OTW or renew your membership for $10 or more before 12 noon eastern time tomorrow and I will give you a free ebook copy of THE SIREN AND THE SWORD, the first of the books in the Magic University series. AND, the first five people who respond with a donation of $25 or more will get either a signed copy of the book in paperback OR a free audiobook download from Audible.com! Your choice!

To participate, go to the OTW website (http://transformativeworks.org/support-otw), go through the Paypal button there to process your donation via credit card or from a Paypal account. Then forward your Paypal receipt, which you should get in email, to me at ctan.writer @ gmail dot com. That’s it! I’ll reply with your reward!

Please feel free to spread this offer around to anyone you know who might enjoy a magical new adult erotic romance, or who might enjoy supporting the rights of fans to create fanworks, or ideally both. :-)

Remember! Deadline is tomorrow, Friday November 21st at 12 noon! (Eastern US time!)

Kyle from Magic University

Okay, I’m having full-on muppetflail about how beautiful this cover is! Seriously! I’m having trouble expressing how perfect it is because when I open my mouth all that comes out is a squeeing sound.

Fortunately, I can still type, though. So later this month we’ll be re-issuing the first of the new editions of the Magic University books! THE SIREN AND THE SWORD, book one, will be out before Halloween from Riverdale Avenue Books!

For those not familiar with them, this is my LGBT New Adult romance/urban fantasy series about the hidden magical university inside Harvard, and the queer goings on there. Like many people’s college years, Kyle’s adventures start out sort of het and “normal”… and they don’t stay that way at all. Kyle’s bisexuality (or maybe pansexuality, since his adventures go beyond gender-based orientation…) is not only a major theme in the later books, it’s might be a key plot point in saving the human race… (*cue epic John Williams soundtrack*)

See the full gorgeous cover in all its glory below the cut!

slow_surrender_112x150So I came to Atlanta to attend my first Moonlight & Magnolias Conference this weekend. I had a lot of romance industry firsts this year. I attended my first RT Booklovers Convention, my first RWA National, I won my first major industry award (the RT Reviewers Choice award), and lots of good stuff like that.

The main reason I decided to come to M&M, though, was because SLOW SURRENDER was a finalist in the Maggie Award for Excellence, in the newly offered erotic romance category. And the reason I entered the Maggies in the first place? Was because of how badly everything shook out with the Rita Awards this year.

This past weekend the National Leather Association held its annual meeting of general membership at the Beyond Vanilla conference in Dallas. The winners of this year’s NLA Writing Awards were announced there!

I am a former winner of the NLA Lifetime Achievement award (2004), and my novel The Prince’s Boy was given Honorable Mention in the NLA Writing Awards. I have been serving as a judge in non-fiction for the awards ever since. We had some truly amazing and creative books in non-fiction this year: one of the most disparate and varied slates we’ve ever had. It was very difficult to judge some works against each other: it wasn’t even apples versus oranges, it was more like apples versus bicycles versus mailboxes. It’s wonderful to see so much publishing and writing on BDSM flourishing these days.

nla_awards_nonfic(Dallas, TX) — Here’s the official press release:

September 27, 2014: For Immediate Release

National Leather Association: International, a leading organization for activists in the pansexual SM/leather community, announced the winners for excellence in literary works in SM/leather/fetish writing published in 2013 at its Annual General Meeting in Dallas, TX September 26-28, 2014 and held during Beyond Vanilla. The judges received a greater number of nominations this year than ever before and judging in most categories was quite difficult with such exemplary pieces of writing.

With so many wonderful works coming in decisions were very difficult for the judges so there was a tie in the Non-Fiction Book category. Winners of the Geoff Mains Non-Fiction Book Award are John Huxley for The Artisan’s Book of Fetishcraft: Patterns and Instructions for Creating Professional Fetishwear, Restraints and Sensory Equipment (Greenery Press) and F.R.R. Mallory for The Kinky Feminist (self-published). Honorable mention in this category goes to Thom Magister for Biker Bar: Bikes, Beer, and Boys: A Playful Look at the Roots of the Leather Bar (Perfectbound Press)

nla_awards_covers_fictionIn the John Preston Short Fiction category, the winner is Peter Masters for “Imperfect Journeys” (self-published). Honorable mention for short story goes to D. L. King for “Mr. Smith, Ms. Jones Will See You Now” from the anthology Ageless Erotica, ed. Joan Price.

Winner of the Samois Anthology Award is Laura Antoniou (ed.), No Safewords (Circlet Press). Honorable mention goes to Sassafras Lowrey (ed.), for Leather Ever After: An Anthology of Kinky Fairy Tales (Ravenous Publications)

Pauline Reage Novel category winner is Laura Antoniou for The Killer Wore Leather (Cleis Press). The judges had were unable to select only one runner up so there was a tie for Honorable Mention in this category. Honorable Mentions go to Chris Bellows for The Blacksmith’s Daughter (Pink Flamingo Publications) and to Elizabeth Schechter for House of Sable Locks (Circlet Press)

The winner of the Cynthia Slater Non-fiction Article Award is I.G. Fredrick for “What Some Women Tops and Bottoms Have in Common” which appeared on October 12 in BDSM Book Reviews (www.bdsmbookreviews.com). Honorable Mention in this category goes to Janet Hardy for “My Tantric “Awakening” Turned Me Off Sex” which appeared March 15 in Salon (www.salon.com)

Nominations for literary works published in 2014 will open later this year. If you have any questions please direct them to the committee chair at nlai.awards @ gmail.com.

I got the following press release from the Bi Writers Association today, announcing the opening of submissions for the Bisexual Book Awards. The small publishing company I run, Circlet Press, was a co-winner of last year’s Bisexual Publisher of the Year award, and most of my books feature bisexual characters (although some suffer from the same invisibility as bisexuals in real life… it doesn’t always come up!).

The Bisexual Book Awards are awarded annually and the categories include fiction, nonfiction, YA, biography/memoir, erotica, poetry, and speculative fiction (sf/fantasy/horror). From the press release:

dgc_1_wattpadVarious fans have told me recently that they wish they had started reading Daron’s Guitar Chronicles sooner. They feel like they kind of missed the boat on discussing the early chapters.

So here’s what we’re doing. I’m going to keep posting new chapters to the regular Daron’s Guitar Chronicles website, but starting TODAY we’re starting a re-read and re-launch from the very beginning on Wattpad!

Wattpad is a serial fiction site that has 25 million users, only 10% of whom are authors. Wattpad also has a social media aspect to it: you can vote for your favorite chapters and stories, become a “fan” so you’ll be notified when new chapters appear, etc.

A new chapter of Daron’s Guitar Chronicles will appear EVERY DAY on Wattpad until we’re synched up, after which I’ll just mirror the two new posts a week on the DGC site onto Wattpad, too.

So if you’ve been thinking about wanting to read my magnum opus about a gay guitar player trying to make it as a rock star in the 1980s, here’s a great chance to do so.

Making an account on Wattpad is free, and just like on the DGC site both I and Daron will answer comments addressed to us! So come and get started. To give people a running start, the first 30 posts are already live and we’ll start adding one a day from here on out! Jump in: http://www.wattpad.com/story/49160-daron%27s-guitar-chronicles

For those who missed the video chat I did last night to celebrate the launch of Slow Satisfaction, it’s now on YouTube! It’s one hour, includes me answering questions from readers, talking about my upcoming projects, talking about BDSM and romance, and at the very end I read a somewhat non-spoilery erotic snippet.

No, I don’t mean suspension hooks, I mean delicious snippets from the book SLOW SATISFACTION! My latest BDSM romance, the final installment in the Struck by Lightning Trilogy, came out yesterday! Every week a group of romance writers all post a bunch of “book hooks” so check out links to all of them at the bottom of the post.

Spankings and bondage don’t make a person fall in love any more than candlelight and roses do.

    1. “Negotiation is fun. Contracts are dull.” (Said James while running a cane over Karina’s buttocks)
    2. “Spanking is only for those I love, not those I loathe.” -James
    3. “Spankings and bondage don’t make a person fall in love any more than candlelight and roses do.”
    4. “Any penalty he exacted if I failed would be as much fun as any reward for success. BDSM was win-win that way.”
    5. Karina: “So our safeword is ‘no?’” </ br>James: “It’s a perfectly good word, isn’t it?”
    6. “Oh fuck,” I said, and I meant it.

“Soooo thankful that I got my hands on this book a little bit early since this has become one of my favorite series to date. We have been taken on such a roller coaster and the games that they play are so intricate that I don’t know about anyone else, but I’ve been really excited to see where it goes… while i’m sad that the trilogy is over, I’m really happy with how it went!”

And I wrote a guest blog for Rainy Day Reviews:

“I wanted to write a story about a kinky billionaire because I feel some of the books out there are, well, giving kinky billionaires a bad name.”
