Ricki Hamilton and her sister have just inherited a vast estate in the Hollywood hills. Unfortunately, with that legacy comes the most exclusive club in Hollywood history, a secret BDSM establishment where only the rich and the naughty come to play. Ricki wants nothing to do with BDSM and is trying to find ways to get out of having to run the club . . . until she meets Axel, a sexy and enigmatic rock star who makes her want to submit to needs she didn’t know she had.

Praised by Tara Sue Me, author of The Submissive series, and Christina Lauren, authors of the Beautiful series!

“Everyone knows Cecilia Tan is the queen of hot, but she’s also the queen of wit and angst and voice. Taking the Lead is a book that grabs you by the collar and gives you flirty-eyes. It will tell you, ‘Go sit, over there in the corner chair, and don’t get up until you’re done.’ You will do it-absolutely and happily-because Cecilia knows exactly what you want.”―Christina Lauren, New York Times bestselling author of Beautiful Bastard and Sweet Filthy Boy

“Cecilia Tan writes erotic romance the way it was meant to be written: full of emotion, intensity, and chemistry that’s so hot it burns the page. Taking the Lead is no exception; it’s deliciously sexy and utterly satisfying.”―Tara Sue Me, New York Times bestselling author

magic u bundle cover revised 300Woo! The rush of folks to fill up their new e-readers and Kindles has pushed the limited time Magic University bundle into the top 50 in Amazon’s bisexual romance bestseller list! I’m very psyched about this, as you might imagine!

Reminder to fans who have already read the series, if you just want the bonus novella, Christmas Magic, you can do any a good turn for me or the world and I’ll email it to you free. Details in my earlier post: http://blog.ceciliatan.com/archives/2613 (tl;dr — write a review, donate to a good cause, get free ebook!)

For those who are new to the series and trying to figure out what “bisexual romance” means exactly, it’s a bit of an odd category that includes some menage and multi-partner romances, some “switched from one orientation to another” romances, and some flat out porn that may not really be “romance” to some readers but which gets thrown into the list at the Kindle store anyway. What makes the Magic University series bisexual is our hero, Kyle, whose quest for true love brings him through many trials and experiences, including everything from traditional sweet (heterosexual) romance to a kind of four-way poly quad he forms with his best friend and their lovers, to his attraction/obsession with his nemesis/rival.

Kyle’s true magic is love and the ways he is able to open his heart again and again despite being hurt in the past (and present). With no restrictions on the gender of those whom he loves, that lands him in the bisexual category–and bestseller list–on Amazon.

Me, I call it new adult erotic fantasy romance and that is already enough adjectives, no?

Please tell your friends about it now while it’s such a great deal, $9.99 for all six books in the series (five full books plus the new novella)!

Some of you have been asking me what the bonus novella in the Magic University digital box set is like. I figure the best way to answer that question is give you all a little taste! But note! SPOILER ALERT! The novella takes place AFTER the series, so you really need to read the series first before you understand what’s going on here and why it matters.

“Tan has long been one of the foremost voices in writing and publishing erotic sci-fi and fantasy. With her New Adult paranormal romance Magic University series, Tan combines her favorite elements from the Harry Potter books with LGBT characters and eroticism. Her protagonist Kyle Wadsworth, studying at the secret magical university Veritas, learns to harness sex magic to combat sirens and prophecies alike. With Kyle starting out knowing less than Jon Snow, he experiences the kind of in-depth sexual apprenticeship that Anastasia Steele should have learned at the hands of Christian Grey.”—Tor.com

“Magic adds a level of spice to Kyle’s journey. … There are many very sensual scenes in the story, with a final scene that is a climax in a lot of interesting ways. The Magic University series looks like it’s going to be a fun ride with lots of eroticism. The Siren and the Sword is a delicious start.”
–Paranormal Romance Reviews

“Magic University has a good storyline, and the types of magic used are very innovative and set it apart from other books of this genre. Though at times the author alludes to what is going to possibly happen, she does a wonderful job of keeping the reader guessing right up until the end. … Ms. Tan has done an outstanding job of feeding my Harry Potter obsession in a very adult fashion.” — Book Wenches

“Joining Kyle as he experienced many rites of passage, both ordinary and magical, was a delight. It was such a treat to escape to Veritas. The world of “magic users” is enticing and I look forward to spending more time at Veritas. Count me in for the whole series, it’s just that good.” — Manic Readers Reviews

On January 26th 2016 my new series, Secrets of a Rock Star, will launch. Each book in the series will feature a different member of the band The Rough, starting with Axel Hawke, the lead singer. As a preview to the series, I thought I’d share my visual references for Axel.

Axel was an “army brat” (Air Force, actually) who used music as a way to make friends (or as a refuge when all he made was enemies) while his family moved around not only the United States but Japan, Germany, and England. When he was 10, during the stint in England, he met Mal Kenneally, a guitarist, and they dreamed of starting a band. Axel’s parents divorced when he was 12-13 and he and his mother settled in Massachusetts.

At age 16, Axel ran away from home when his mother discovered he was singing in a band and all his bandmates were over 18. When none of his bandmates would take him in for long, his band broke up and Axel ended up in England with Mal again, where they got up to much trouble. His mother eventually convinced him to return to the US, he finished high school, and was in his sophomore year in college when it became his turn to take Mal in. They started The Rough and the band’s popularity soon took off.

In fact, when TAKING THE LEAD begins, it’s the night of the Grammy Awards and The Rough are nominees for Best New Artist.

Here are some of the visual references I used for Axel while writing TAKING THE LEAD. I was quite taken with Mig Ayesa but I wanted my lead singer to have bleach-blond highlights, so here are a couple of rough photoshop versions, blond-izing him, mixed in with Jared Leto in his blond rock star phase and a blond model whose name I didn’t find:

A random blond model with a very Axel expression on his face.

In related news! The Nobilis Erotica podcast did an audio version of one of the short stories from Spellbinding: Tales from the Magic University! I’ll be doing a plethora of guest posts and interviews this week of course. Some of them are starting to appear already:

SF Signal: On Writing Multi-Genre Fiction

Thank you everyone who has stuck with me through the ups and downs of this series, the change of publisher, and everything in between!

Here’s the official description of THE POET AND THE PROPHECY:

Kyle Wadsworth has mastered sex magic, dreamwalking, and even poetry in his years at Veritas. But in this conclusion to the Magic University series of new adult paranormal fantasy romance, Kyle begins his senior year full of doubt. Will the dire ancient prophecy he has been studying come true if Kyle cannot find true love? The signs of the Burning Days seem to be everywhere—odd storms, earthquakes, and people losing their magic—and though Kyle has many loving friends and eager acquaintances, he has no true love in sight. The only person in Kyle’s heart is Frost, and the last time they laid eyes on each other, it didn’t end well.

Frost has a troubled past and deep secrets. Kyle begins to hope, though, when it appears he and Frost will be in a class together. A poetry class. Maybe Frost will start to thaw after all, though Kyle has a long way to go from nemesis to lover. If the prophecy speaks true, our hero will need love to keep the world, his friends, and himself from losing magic forever.

“The Magic University books really need to be read all together to be understood. You should definitely grab all four books and get comfortable – you’re in for an exciting ride! The Poet and the Prophecy is a satisfying conclusion to the series, and one that adult Harry Potter fans will no doubt enjoy.” —Lucy Felthouse, Seattle Post-Intelligencer

“I love that in The Poet and The Prophecy Kyle needs to draw on everything about himself to succeed, from his talent as a poet to his bisexuality. How often do bisexuals get to save the world in books? Kyle accomplishes things that a ‘typical’ straight hero would fail at, including the ‘enemies to lovers’ relationship we’ve all been waiting for since book one.” –BookPost

“Tan has long been one of the foremost voices in writing and publishing erotic sci-fi and fantasy. “Very nice series of books that I look forward to rereading some day. The frequent description of ‘Harry Potter for Adults’ made me fear it would be totally derivative, but it really wasn’t.” —BookLikes

I just noticed that TAKING THE LEAD is now up for pre-order most places! (In fact Amazon has the paperback at 25% off right now, which means B&N does, too.)

Pre-orders are important to authors especially at B&N and iTunes because all pre-orders count toward the FIRST DAY of sales in those stores, which can really help a book hit the bestseller lists in those stores! And sometimes getting onto one of those lists will help new readers find it which will then help keep those books on the list if they enjoy the book and tell their friends about it!

Note that you can use the IndieBound bookstore finder to find an independent bookstore near you where you can pre-order it: Taking the Lead at Indiebound

Amazon and B&N.com are happy to take order for either ebook OR paperback:

  • Amazon: paperback or ebook
  • Barnes & Noble: paperback or ebook
  • And of course there are a bunch of ebook-only stores:

  • Kobo: ebook only
  • iTunes: ebook only
  • Google Play: ebook only
  • etc…

dgc_ebook_7_cover_version3_510Tadaa! Here we are folks, with a new volume of Daron’s Guitar Chronicles finally out in ebook! Volume seven begins in January 1990 (whoaaa…. the nineties…!) with Daron’s international jaunt from Australia to Guitar Craft School to Seville, and ends a few months later after his much anticipated reunion with Ziggy.

I think the first of the “reunion with Ziggy” chapters might be the post with the most single reads in the 24 hours after posting in the history of Daron’s Guitar Chronicles.

Now, what’s all this about a MEME CONTEST??

Here we go! Various fans of DGC have gotten into making memes or “quote art” — combining photos with quotes from the series. I’ve decided why not make it a contest? Here are the rules:

    1. PRIZE: Grand prize will be a DGC Prize Pack including a Moondog Three tote bag, both paperback omnibus editions of Daron’s Guitar Chronicles, and a $25 Amazon Gift Card. Five runners up will get a prize pack of a tote bag and all seven ebook editions.
    2. Deadline for entry is September 9, 2015.

I’m so excited to bring you the brand new cover design for SPELLBINDING, the anthology of stories set in my Magic University universe, some written by me, many written by other authors and fanfic writers whom I invited to come play in my sandbox. And it was your votes that determined who will be on the cover of not only this book but the fourth and final novel in the series, as well! You voted for Master Brandish to appear on the cover of The Poet and the Prophecy, which will wrap up the series in September, and the second place vote, for Damiana Pendragon, we decided to put on the anthology!

These are the annual awards given by the Passionate Ink chapter of the RWA, the specialty chapter (originally founded by Sylvia Day!) for writers of erotica and erotic romance. So this is quite an honor, for this book to be recognized within the erotic romance realm this way. The book is a finalist in the Contemporary category.

I was so glad I got to catch one of the We Need Diverse Books panels at this year’s BookExpo America. I am a fast typist so I am able to capture a lot of what was said, but nowhere close to everything, so please do no take this as a “transcript.” It isn’t. It’s a selection of the comments made and may contain errors because I can’t type perfectly and listen at the same time! But I wanted to capture as much as I could so that people who couldn’t be here could still hear this conversation. Because it is such an important conversation no matter what genre you write or publish in.

    The panel included:
Ellen Oh, author of The Prophecy Series, co-founder
Lamar Giles, author of Fake ID and Endangered
Linda Sue Park, Newbery Award-winning, NY Times bestselling author
Matt de la Peña, NY Times bestselling author of multiple books

Whew! At last I can tell you all the news! We’ve been working on a project for quite a while now and I can finally officially announce that my upcoming new paranormal series, THE VANISHED CHRONICLES, will published by Tor Books!

I’ve long admired Tor as a publishing house. When I founded Circlet Press back in 1992, Tor founder Tom Doherty gave me some of my first and best advice about book publishing. Over the years I’ve only remained impressed with the quality of Tor’s list and if you look on my shelves you’ll see many of my favorite books bear the Tor logo, like Jacqueline Carey’s Kushiel’s Dart and Steven Brust’s The Phoenix Guards. To be joining them is beyond exciting.

THE VANISHED CHRONICLES will be a paranormal/urban fantasy series where I play with two of my favorite things: 1) BDSM, and 2) the idea that magical world co-exists with our own but non-magical folks have gotten the details wrong. In THE VANISHED CHRONICLES I’ll explain where all those myths about vampires come from. “Vampires” may not be real, but an ancient cult of blood magic? Yes, please!

If you read my Magic University books you know I like to mix ancient prophecy with modern sexuality. So there will be passion, power, eroticism, magic, love, et cetera. The first book is tentatively scheduled to come out in Spring 2017, so you’ve got a while to anticipate it.
If you’d like to keep up to date on my progress, and maybe even get sneak peeks of some sexy scenes, there’s always my monthly email newsletter. Sign up here:
    Cecilia’s Mailchimp List

(P.S. Note about the term “paranormal” — I’m using it somewhat interchangeably here with “urban fantasy.” The series will have a romantic pairing in each book, but will have an overarching plot, so some might count that as paranormal romance, some might count that as urban fantasy. I count it as both, basically…)
