Hope

July 4th, 2016- Universal Studios, Orlando, Florida

Ziggy’s eyes locked on mine. “You have to get a wand from Ollivanders,” he said with too much enthusiasm.

I glanced at the line snaking its way down the sidewalk. “I’m not standing in that line.”

“But you have to!” He tugged on my arm like a little kid, and I hid my smile, not wanting to encourage him. “The wand chooses the wizard, Daron. Come on.”

Damn the person that turned him on to Harry Potter.  “Yes,” I said reasonably, “we can go in the store and buy a wand so we can do all this magic-y stuff while we are here, but I’m not standing in line to have one specially chosen for me.”

“Oh, believe in magic, you Muggle,” he said in a huff and waltzed past me into the store.

We’re All Mad Here

The Queen of Hearts stood four stories above on the balcony of the Castle watching the last of the Ordinaries leave through the main gates. He swayed on his feet as a rush of excitement caused a pounding in his ears. Wait… there was also pounding that wasn’t from his accelerated heartrate. Colin, the Queen of Hearts, looked over his shoulder and through the open French style doors to see the door to Cinderella’s pumpkin coach swing open and a sleek white cat jump out. Behind the cat the coach door closed with a snick and was once again just part of the flat mosaic tile artwork imbedded in the floor. Colin hurried inside and closed the balcony doors behind him. The last time Bart had been here he jumped up on the railing and disaster was barely avoided when Colin was able to catch him by the tail. Colin was not risking either a cat splat or painful scratches. Although Colin was sure Bart had been eying the railing again, when he turned toward the room, Bart was sitting calmly cleaning between the extended toes of a pristine front paw.

As promised, here’s another song that Meg sent! She writes:

The background on this one is: Basically it’s kind of a song-ified version of Chapter 584, “Touch and Go”, and some of Daron’s frustrations preceding, therein, and further perpetuated by the chapter.

When I first read it I was just as surprised as Daron was at just *how* angry and closed off Ziggy got during the chapter. Granted, I realized going in that they were still in an undefined and unconfirmed place in terms of their relationship (in both the personal and professional sides, really), and that if anything on any level settled, it wasn’t going to do so easily, but still. The awesome description at one point, of how Ziggy’s face “closed like a storefront bringing down a chainlink gate”, is pretty much how I felt by the end of this chapter. Crash. The fact that it was also the end of that particular Part of the story made the feeling of a dead stop land even harder.

So you might remember Meg sent us a song once before for a fanworks challenge (“Longing Song“), and this time she brought us one in response to the Orlando challenge. She writes:

“For this most recent fanworks call, I have a song for you. “Moondog Kingdom” is a song about an M3 (plus a few of their inner circle) trip to the Magic Kingdom in an A/U where at the end of the 1989 tour, instead of everything going fully to hell, everyone just goes to Disney World instead. (Also in this A/U Splash Mountain exists in 1989. Apparently it wasn’t actually built until 1992. But that’s what imagination is for – tweaking theme park history to suit your silly songwriting needs!)

“Thank you for making this call for fanworks. In the immediate few days after the Pulse shooting, I was reeling mentally, and when I saw this call it gave me something to focus on. (My deal: I’m a fellow “B” in the QUILTBAG, and I was born in 1987, so I came of age and did my coming out in a time where things – while not perfect or nearly safe enough for everyone – have been getting steadily better and in many ways have been better than I know they were for people before me. This was the first time something of this magnitude of anti-LGBT hatred has happened during my lifetime where I’ve actually been at an age to take it in and it just…hit. Hard.) My brain was basically a circuit of shock and grief and anger and upset-ness for a little while, and I knew it would take a few days for it to stop running that way, but I knew that when it did I would have this to look forward to working on. And when I finally did get to work on this, it was healing, as intended, and it was just fun. I always enjoy writing songs for DGC. :)”

You should be able to play the song in the WordPress embedded MP3 player:

Any thoughts on what Ziggy’s wand would be made of? Daron’s would clearly have a core of guitar string ;)

(A note about the Orlando fanworks & fanworks submitted earlier in the year. I apologize for how long it’s taking to get them posted. I hadn’t counted on traveling taking up July in the way it did, or needing to disconnect from much of the internet after some of the news in the US. It’s been a rough summer, yeah? I have several more submissions waiting, including songs from Bill and Meg and stories from S and Chris, and will be posting those over the next few weeks. I promise you, they’re all worth the wait.  ~sanders)

It’s been a rough week. Daron has been working us like a slave-driver for what seems like months. Now, we’ve got to forget everything (or memorize everything, who knows?) for about six weeks, then rush through getting ready for the tour.

Today’s the last day before the break, thank God. Can’t believe my luck, a buddy sent me two plane tickets to Orlando and two five-day passes to Disney World. Chet and his wife, what’s her name, had to give up their vacation when Chet’s grandfather suddenly died. I guess he could have skipped the funeral, but he wasn’t about to skip reading the will. He’s expecting to inherit enough to buy lifetime passes to the place with plenty left over.

There’s that kid again, Carn, or Canaan, or something. Nice looking kid, shy, tries to be helpful and stay out of the way at the same time. He’s been helping people move amps and stools and shit for almost the whole week. When he’s not doing that he’s trying to eat Daron alive with his eyes. I’m not sure Daron has noticed the kid’s even here.

Fanworks challenge submission #2, by Chris, featuring Daron/Ziggy/Colin. Delicious.

***

Daron usually tells our story. Yes, it’s our story, not just his. We’re all in this together, even when we’re physically apart. When Daron told his fantasy about a three way with Colin, I don’t expect that he thought I’d read it. Well I did. Guess what? I think we’ve all had thoughts about what a three way between Daron, Colin and me would be like. What surprised me most about Daron’s fantasy…besides how freakin’ hot it was, and that he actually talked (eh…wrote) about it… was that it was totally different from how I’ve thought about what it would be like to have them both. And believe me, I have thought about it. You can’t be stuck in a rolling sardine can for weeks at a time and not fantasize about the hot guys right there in your face.

First of three submissions for the February Fanworks Challenge, with the theme of threesomes or moresomes. Enjoy!

***

Barrett was speaking. “OK, you get tomorrow off to take care of personal stuff. Get your partying done tonight, because tomorrow night you’re going to bed early. We leave the next morning for South America.”

We all looked at each other. Chris said, “Party!” We all yelled back, “Tonight!” I guess that settled it. Ziggy, Daron, Flip and I went out for dinner. We met the others back at the hotel and immediately got into an argument about what to do.

We had three fantastic submissions this month, and the vampire theme apparently really resonated with Nat, bcynic, and Stephanie. All three are rated GEN/TEEN, meaning safe as houses for most readers and work environs, with a few curse words involved. Thank you all so much for participating!

November’s theme will be posted later this week.

Hi, all! Sanders here with news on two exciting things coming up for us as DGC fans.

After the success of the summer fanworks posts, I talked to Cecilia about continuing them in a monthly challenge. Amanda agreed to keep wrangling the fanworks, and then S. had a brilliant idea. So, first, Wednesdays are going to feature “Rockin’ Robin”—a round-robin, multi-writer collaborative fic challenge. Second, we’re issuing a monthly challenge for all forms of fanworks. Suggestions for a name for the monthly challenge are welcome and I’ll personally make a mini-mix/meme/poem/ficlet for everyone who offers something up in the comments.

In this post! Cover reveal for DGC Volume Seven! Fanworks reminder! We discuss taglines! More pop singers who came out! Cool music! And more!

ctan: So, both of us have bad enough time sense that here it is the middle of February 2015 and this is January’s liner note.

Daron: Oops.

ctan: Meanwhile, in the story it’s 1991. Which is really kind of weird when you think about it.

Daron: Why?

ctan: Because the tag line on the website is “the closet, the stage, the 80s,” and the subtitle of the omnibus is “a story of rock and roll, coming out, and coming of age in the 1980s.”

Daron: Oh. Welllll… maybe it refers to the 1980s sensibilities of the story even when it’s taking place in the ’90′s?
