So the call went out among our contacts that I was going to be holding auditions for drummers in New York. But we still hadn’t made any firm decisions about the rest of the instrumentation. Horns? Backing singers? Auxiliary percussion? I wasn’t going to make those decisions without talking to Ziggy and Barrett again, now that I’d heard the record.

I still didn’t love Ziggy’s album, but I at least had gotten used to it.

(By the way, there will be a Saturday post! The donation counter hit $100 so now it goes back to $0 and starts accruing again! The more times we hit $100, the more extra story posts there will be! -ctan)

First thing when we got to Barrett’s office the next day I told him I needed the album on cassette so I could walk around with it in my headphones. Lo and behold, he had a tape deck and the preamp necessary for connecting a turntable to it. I know. That’s like I just said he had a crank to start the engine of his car. I set side one to dubbing and then turned the actual volume in the speakers down so we could have another meeting with The Aesthetician and some other folks.

I promise every chapter for the next million years won’t be about meetings, even if at the time it felt to me like my life was going to be nothing but meetings for the foreseeable future. There’s one that day in particular I should tell you about, though.

Not the one Barrett and I had after Ziggy left for his voice lesson, although that one was key. He hit me with a lot of questions about tech needs for a band that we still hadn’t settled on a size for. I felt like every question we answered created three more that we needed to answer. Then he left me in his office with a phone for a while, an extension right on the side table at the chair where Ziggy usually sat during meetings.

The rehearsal space was going to be a warehouse in Queens. Auditions could happen there, too, if I wanted. Time for me to start calling some people.

But the first person I called was Carynne.

Daron, here. Hi folks. I had to write something to go before today’s chapter, not because of anything in the chapter but because of the news we got late Sunday night that David Bowie had died.

We met up with Barrett and Ziggy at the WTA offices, which were on a couple of floors of a midtown high rise not terribly far from the BNC and WTA offices. Not quite Rockefeller Center but only a few blocks south of there. Their lobby had modular white leather chairs shaped like kidney beans and photos of Weiland Thomas with Mickey Rooney and Dolly Parton. Elvis. President Kennedy. They were not all his clients, but the photos weren’t labeled to tell you who was and who wasn’t.

Barrett came out to meet us himself and then led us past the cubicles of secretaries and junior agents to his office, which wasn’t a corner office but had large windows and was spacious enough to seat six around a low glass coffee table. There was a magazine in Spanish on the table with a photo of Ziggy onstage in an inset box on the cover. I resisted the urge to pick it up. Ziggy was already sitting in the chair in the deepest corner.

“Can I get you something to drink?” Barrett asked as I shuffled across to sit next to Zig. “Lemonade?”

“Uh, sure.”

“Hard or soft?”

So the reason Barrett was there that morning wasn’t to trigger an existential crisis in my artistic life, but to drive us to San Diego. He didn’t trust that we wouldn’t end up dead in a ditch, and given that neither Ziggy nor I had really slept an appreciable amount, I had to agree it was a wise plan. I wondered where Tony was, but I figured if I was supposed to know, they would have told me.

They had a hurried, whispered conversation while I carried my bag and guitar to the elevator. When they caught up with me I said, “You don’t have to whisper. I know I’m being moody and weird.”

I was more talkative than I expected to be through breakfast given that I was on short sleep and I usually didn’t express myself so much in front of people I didn’t know well. But Barrett got me on the subject of rock radio and I guess I couldn’t help myself.

“It makes no sense that what is labeled ‘alternative’ is what rock and roll is about: rebellion,” I said.

Barrett was shredding a muffin into bits with his fingers, meticulously picking out the blueberries and eating them. I still couldn’t really get a read on him. “Well, but what if what you’re talking about isn’t what this industry does? What this industry does is commidification. Rock and roll quote-rebellion-unquote has been around just long enough to be commidified into the mainstream.”

When I got back to Ziggy’s room it was more like 20 minutes later, as it had turned out I had no idea where the key to my own room had gone and in fact wasn’t even sure what my room number was. Thankfully I knew where the main Nomad suite was and found Flip nursing a hangover there, and he had keys and knew what room had my stuff and guitar in it. I told him I was going AWOL until sound check in San Diego and he seemed to heartily approve.

I changed my clothes and then dragged both my duffel bag and my guitar back to Ziggy’s. I knocked on the door and it took a while for him to open it. I could hear voices.

The oh-my-god-what-ARE-we-going-to-play panic finally hit at about four in the morning when we were stuck in traffic on I-10 westbound. There had been some kind of accident and even though it was the middle of the night cars were backed up for miles. It wasn’t moving at all. The panic was like in those dreams where you have to take a final exam but you have no pants or you didn’t learn the instrument your recital is supposed to be in. Except this was real.
